Well luckily, I was reading Cosmo at my desk (working hard, clearly), and they have some good tips to get more time out of your day!

*2-Minute Rule:  Make a list of things you need to do, then start with anything that takes 2 minutes or less.  It’s a quick way to cut down the list, making it less stressful to look at and tackle!

*Ignore the beep:  Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean ignore your alarm clock like I thought.  Don’t be a slave to your email!  Checking it every two minutes will drive you crazy.  Instead, Cosmo suggests closing your inbox, but setting a timer on your computer to go off every 30 minutes to check it.

*Cut off a rambler: You know that annoying person in the next desk that tells you aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall about their weekend? (*ahemFenwayahem*+)? Shut them up.  Politely say, “I’d love to hear more, but I reeeeeally have to get this done.  You know how the boss gets when he has to wait!  Wanna meet up for happy hour and chat?”  You get work done AND drinks later! win-win!

*Give yourself a quitting time: You’re more likely to manage your time better when you force yourself to go home at a certain time. Make plans with a friend at 5:30, or if you have kids at a daycare, make sure you pick them up by a certain time every day (plus, most daycares charge you your actual first born if you’re a minute late picking them up!).  When you know you HAVE to leave, you’re more likely to get everything done.

*Internet police: Aw crap, I knew this was coming.  A free service at rescuetime.com will monitor how much time you spend on certain sites (facebook, anyone?) and will even block distracting sites.  Because let’s face it, nobody goes on facebook for “just a minute”.

Does your work computer look like this a little too much?

+ Correction: I’m the rambler of the office.  Poor Fenway has to listen to me chatter on and on while he’s trying to get work done.  Sorry Fenway! :)
